Hello San Diego,

My goodness! There are a lot of events happening in and around San Diego in the coming days! We are truly fortunate to live in such a diverse and interesting city.

Friday(today) and Saturday, a Chicano Beer and Music Fest will take place in Vista.

Friday (today) in Balbo Park (at the Organ Pavilion), the Mexican Independence Day Grito and Concert will feature performances by Grupo Ellas, Mariachi Estrellas de Chula Vista, and Ballet Folklorico La Fiesta Danzantes de San Diego. At Casa Lahori, Rahis Khan will perform music from India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan Ghazals.

Saturday and Sunday, the annual Viking Fest will take place in Vista.

Saturday at City Heights/Weingart Branch Library, there will be a Mariachi Fest with a generous number of groups performing. The Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park will host a Mexican Independence Day Celebration. The El Gritó de Mexico event in Chula Vista will celebrate Mexican independence and embrace Mexican heritage. GRAMMY-award-winning Arturo O'Farri and his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra will perform at the Rady Shell. Japanese rock band Chai will perform at the House of Blues. Also at the House of Blues, Mexican rapper Alemán will perform. At Otay Ranch Town Center, there will be a Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration. At the Seaside Center for Spiritual Learning in Encinitas, there will be a concert of Indian Classical Music. At Queen Bee's, they will host an Eritrean Night. Mexican singer-songwriter and accordionist Christian Nodal who specializes in Norteño and Mariachi music will perform at Pechanga Arena. At Alliant University, the Gujarati Association of San Diego will hold a Navrati Celebration.

Sunday, the House of Germany will hold their annual Lawn Program at the International Cottages. The House of France will hold a Summer Picnic at Sunset Point Park.

Monday at the San Diego Craft Collective, there will be a Nuristani Chip Carving Workshop.

Tuesday at Cal State San Marcos, Malcolm X's daughter Dr. Betty Shabazz will speak on what she learned from her iconic activist parents and how you can learn to make a difference. At the La Jolla Playhouse, Kristina Wong's Sweatshop Overlord will open.

Wednesday, Crazy Rich Asians will be screened at the Manchester Grand Hyatt.

Next Thursday, at UC San Diego Park & Market the National Conflict Resolution Center will present Shared Differences: A Conversation about Antisemitism and Islamophobia in the U.S.: A Path Forward. Indian vocalist Sanjeeavani Bhelande will perform at Qualcomm Auditorium.

Next Weekend, at Bread & Salt, there will be 3 performances of the opera Dido & Aeneas.

Next Friday, Los Lobos will perform in Temecula. There will be an opening for the La Jolla Historical Society for The Smallest Show on Earth Exhibition. You can dine and watch a dance performance by Jillina (with live music) at Sufi Mediterranean Cuisine. Ain’t Misbehavin - The Fats Waller Musical Show will open at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido. At the Worldbeat Center, Mama Charlotte will read her poetry and talk about her unique life experiences. Billie! Backstage with Lady Day open at the Oceanside Theatre with performances through the first weekend in October. At Balboa Theatre, Argentinian singer Amanda Miguel and her daughter Ana Victoria Verdaguer will perform.

Next Saturday and Sunday the San Diego International Dragon Boat Race and the Pacific Islander Festival, the Adams Avenue Street Fair, and Carlsbad Artwalk will all be happening. So many choices!

Next Saturday, the Chinese Historical Museum will host an online talk on the Maritime Silk Road. At Marie Widman Park, there will be a Black Family Empowerment Day Celebration. The International Rescue Committee will host a Diversity Through Design fashion show showcasing designers from Iraq, Mexico, Uganda, Afghanistan, Somalia, Togo, and Syria. At the Quartyard, there will be an Oktoberfest celebration with food, drink, music, and dance.

Next Sunday, the annual British Car Day returns to Spanish Landing Park. At Grape Day Park in Escondido, the Fiestas Patrias Festival will take place with music, dance, arts, food, and more. Encanto will, once again, be shown atop the Manchester Grand Hyatt. And rounding out next weekend's events, Latino artists Miguel Mateos and Mikel Erentxun will perform at the House of Blues.

Cross-cultural/international-themed theatrical offerings in San Diego include Fandango for Butterflies (and Coyotes) at the La Jolla Playhouse, Cabaret at the Cygnet Theatre in Old Town, Come Fall in Love – The DDLJ Musical at the Old Globe's Shiley Stage, and What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank at the Old Globe's Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre. As mentioned above, Kristina Wong - Sweatshop Overlord at the La Jolla Playhouse, Ain’t Misbehavin - The Fats Waller Musical Show at the California Center for the Arts, and Billie! Backstage with Lady Day at the Oceanside Theatre all open next week.
